Dear Representative,

The purpose of birthright citizenship, as outlined in the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, was to guarantee that the children of recently-freed slaves and their descendants would be enfranchised and granted U.S. citizenship at birth, not to provide citizenship to the children of temporary foreign visitors, birth tourists, or illegal alien visitors.

Current government policy to grant birthright citizenship to every child born in the United States (with the exception of the children of foreign diplomats posted to the United States) goes against the clear intentions of the 14th Amendment and encourages birth tourism and illegal immigration.

Please support legislation to reform birthright citizenship to ensure that only the children of citizens and legal permanent residents are granted citizenship at birth.
